Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor Course (ATLS®)
Course Overview: Developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, the ATLS® Instructor Course is designed to teach physicians identified as having instructor potential a systematic approach to teaching the ATLS® program. Established educational principles form the foundation for the design of the Instructor Course. The course focuses on models of adult learning and employs an advanced degree adult education specialist to assist candidates in learning how to teach ATLS®. The course is taught over two consecutive days and involves the student/instructor candidates presenting a short interactive educational lecture which is videotaped and evaluated by the group as a teaching tool for the potential instructor.
Course Goals and Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the design of an ATLS® course;
- Describe the principles of learning and microteaching as a tool in the ATLS® Program;
- Demonstrate successful application of a microteaching session;
- Demonstrate Skills Station teaching techniques; and
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of instructors and course directors.
Accreditation of the Course (course sponsor): The ATLS® Instructor Course is a product of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and is sponsored locally by the Arkansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Courses are certified by state directors and verified and recorded centrally by the American College of Surgeons. Local faculty instructors and the course directors are certified by the American College of Surgeons.
Student Target / Number of Students: The target audience is physicians identified as having instructor potential during a provider course. The course size is limited to 9 students.
Credentials for Instructors: All instructors are qualified and experienced ATLS® Instructors. The adult education specialist utilized in this course must have a master’s or preferably a doctorate degree with concentration or specialization in education that includes the science of teaching, learning and the principles of adult education.
